Getting the Rice Ready

This is the view from upstairs hallway where we have our rooms. It rained heavily last night and the ground was wet. A little more humidity than usual but no sun right away which is good. Our motto: Shade is your friend.
The all-important sunscreen. We go through about seven gallons a day. While most of us prefer the cream, Evan is a spray guy.

So today's work involved getting lots more rice ready for the festival on Sunday. The rice is spread on the ground to dry and bigger stems or leaves are removed. As you can see, Teacher Peggy is wearing a face mask to keep away the dust.
Andrew is looking dapper taking a short break. He refused to smile for the picture which disappointed us all a bit.
Inside the workroom, the machine is hulling the rice, taking off the outer husk of the rice. It's lots of work taking the rice in hundred pound bags, bring them to the room, hulling, then taking all the rice back to the storage room.
Always ready to mug for the photographer are Nam, Tuan, Michael, and Teacher Kyle.
The guys just got back from working with the rice and the rain hit just before they were done. All the rice in this picture had to be taken in fast or it would be ruined. Eddie said they made it just in time. Another job well done. Fr. Serra would be proud.
A closer picture of the machine. It's loud and ornery, but does the job. Chris says, "It's hard to make the rice, but it's really easy to eat it." No truer words were ever said.
