Here is a picture of the new generator. It is huge and easily powers the entire complex. We use it when we need to, but it costs $25/hour for diesel, and that is tremendously expensive for the diocese to afford. So most of the time we just deal with the heat and humidity. But that is not easy for the elderly, the babies, and those who work all day in the fields, so please keep them in your prayers. Thanks.
In the summers I spend time with my good friends in Phat Diem, Vietnam, a small country village with a world famous cathedral. Here are some of my musings. If you would like to correspond, please email me: garymeegan@gmail.com.

When You Really Appreciate PG&E
I haven't been able to post since Sunday morning, and it's Wednesday evening a 9:23 p.m. Why is that? Well, first look at the powerlines in the picture below.
OK, it's not that exciting. These are the lines into the cathedral complex where we live. Now imagine all of the lines that go from the hydroeclectric plant in northern Vietnam to the surrounding countryside. Now imagine them with no electrons. Yup, that's what happened. The electricity has been cut for four days. The reason given was that there was not enough water to power the generators. The word on the street is...well, I can't say. So every day we have only had juice from the beginning of dinner (6:30 p.m.) to the end of evening prayer (8:00 p.m.) and later in the evening from about 11:30 p.m. until the end of morning mass (5:45 a.m.)
