There are many children this year who are spending the summer in Phat Diem. They are housed and fed, and are given keyboard lessons in the hope they will play for the choirs in their church when they get older. This program is for those who have very little. Many come with only the clothes on their back. You would be surprised how happy they are...well, I guess most children who are loved are happy, no matter how much money they have. After mass in the morning, the students work at small jobs around the grounds. Here, some are pulling the long grass that grows in the middle of the short grass. As there are no lawnmowers here, it is manual labor that makes things look beautiful. Naturally, the boys work separately from the girls. I think it has something to do with cooties.
In the summers I spend time with my good friends in Phat Diem, Vietnam, a small country village with a world famous cathedral. Here are some of my musings. If you would like to correspond, please email me: garymeegan@gmail.com.
