I was coming back from my evening walk and saw flames leaping over the wall by the outside restrooms. Standing on a chair, I saw Hai and asiked him if everything was OK because the flames looked so high. He gave the high sign so I walked around to where he stood. Yup, it was trash burning time.
There is no regular trash pick up by truck courtesy of the village, so anything that can be burned will. That includes paper and parts of the rice plant left over from husking.
Man, it was hot and I wasn't jealous of the job Hai had to do. The smoke lingered over the playing field as the soccer game was played.
In the summers I spend time with my good friends in Phat Diem, Vietnam, a small country village with a world famous cathedral. Here are some of my musings. If you would like to correspond, please email me: garymeegan@gmail.com.
