Quyen takes the first few ounces of coffee and empties it into a cup then adds sugar. He mixes this into a paste which he then mixes back in to the glass cup when it is full. He keeps filling the glass with hot water then pouring the coffee into other cups for us to drink. You see, part of the fun of having coffee with friends is to be there when it is made. Thanks, Quyen, you make a great cup of coffee.
In the summers I spend time with my good friends in Phat Diem, Vietnam, a small country village with a world famous cathedral. Here are some of my musings. If you would like to correspond, please email me: garymeegan@gmail.com.

Quyen and Making Coffee
Every morning after mass, everyone gathers to have coffee with their friends. I got to Hieu's room and spend time with different people. This morning, Quyen made the coffee. The Vietnamese way is to make drip coffee, one cup at a time. You can see the tin container that holds the ground coffee. Hot water is then put in the container and the water drips through into the glass making it really strong.
