Thursday night, Lich and Minh asked me to go with them to see their parents (I visit them every year) and then have dinner with neighbors in their village. Of course, yes was the only answer. The first video is leaving the village of Phat Diem. On the left is the river, and on the right are shops. Each shop is owned by one family. If they are poor, then their one room home is behind the shop. If they have some money, then they build a second floor. Three or more floors means you have lots of money and your in-laws live with you.
In this second clip, we are now out in the countryside, with lots of room everywhere. The canal is on the right, and you can notice the stems from the rice that has been harvested. There are two uses for these after the harvest: they can be used to thatch roofs or they are burned. Many people burn, so in the early evening there is smoke in the air.
In the summers I spend time with my good friends in Phat Diem, Vietnam, a small country village with a world famous cathedral. Here are some of my musings. If you would like to correspond, please email me: garymeegan@gmail.com.
