This year, five opthamologists (eye doctors) and five surgical nurses are volunteering their time for three days in Ninh Binh City, the capital of the province, about 30 miles from here. Sponsored by the Catholic dioceses, they are operating on patients with glaucoma. There is no charge for this and any person, regardless of religion, is welcome. These are the five doctors with one of the nurses. Oddly enough, the only person in the picture who is wearing glasses is Bishop Joseph.
The nurses are a great bunch and really enjoyed toasting with wine. Here they are with Bishop Joseph. The operations would normally cost $150, but with the generosity of the Catholic community through money and gifts, 50 people a day, a total of 150 needy, will have their eyesight back. I'd say that is pretty amazing.
In the summers I spend time with my good friends in Phat Diem, Vietnam, a small country village with a world famous cathedral. Here are some of my musings. If you would like to correspond, please email me: garymeegan@gmail.com.
